Title: PS3 CELL CPU Eraser Mod by Naked_Snake1995
Post by: FMudanyali on June 14, 2020, 05:53:11 PM
So, last night I got fed up with the noise of my fat PS3 and started searching how to delid the CELL CPU. The more I searched how to do it the more discouraged I got, due to lack of proper tools. But then, I saw this thread: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-ps3-cell-b-e-thermal-dissipation-without-removing-the-ihs.23066/ This guy says to put an eraser in the CPU hole. He must be joking, right? Well I gave it a shot anyways, took me around 15 minutes to do it. I turned the PS3 on without any expectations and everything seemed the same except one thing, the fans were not kicking. I got scared and checked the temps. They were at 50*C and were rising really slowly. I couldn't believe my eyes to be honest. Then I started Persona 5 to push the hardware somewhat. After half an hour, it settled at 72*C at 26% fan speed. I still can't believe this result.

A little eraser piece cut my temperatures from 80*C at 55% fan speed to 72*C at 26% fan speed.

Here is how to do it:

Naked_Snake1995 says to use a stiff 3.5mm thick eraser. I used a 4mm thick soft Faber Castell eraser as I only had that.
Thanks Sony for the convenient hole and Naked_Snake1995 for figuring this out.

why this works
coz useing the eraser helps to apply more presure to the cpu and cpu cooler giveing more contact and better cooling
no dout ill be doing this with my devkit ps3 soon lol

Yes, you can even hear the background but not the PS3.

won't this method put more strain on the soldering points ?  :-\

Not really as PS3 motherboard is thick as hell, and youre distributing the force evenly. Don't go more than 4mm thick eraser and you should be just fine.

To quote Naked_Snake1995,

Q2- Wont the eraser, by appling pressure with the clamps, on top of the CPU, damage the CELL or the BGA?

A2- No, the eraser will create, pressure thowards the chip, and it will be compensated with the PS3 heatsink, so you are creating an even pressure, but enough that the CELL Core touches the IHS, thus making heat transfer and cooling more efficient!

As noted by reapers_ed1t1on on Reddit, Sony apparently put a plastic cover in the CPU hole in some of the models, which means even they think this mod is safe. You can see it in the timestamped video.

Used a stiff eraser this time but didn't see much difference.
Just remembered my room is 30+ *C now.

After 5 months, its still going strong. Praise be upon the eraser.
